Assoc. Prof. Ts Dr. Vimala Balakrishnan from the Department of Information Systems at the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, Universiti Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, extended an invitation to the Malaysian Association for the Prevention of Tuberculosis (MAPTB) Federal to collaborate on a project titled "Revolutionizing TB Patient Care in Malaysia through a Digital Health Platform." This initiative aimed to develop an integrated platform, including a mobile application, to enhance tuberculosis (TB) treatment adherence in the country.
Dr. Balakrishnan, along with her team comprising undergraduates Mr. Thayanathan Kumaresan, Mr. Tiong Chiong Kian, and Mr. Nicholas Ng Jian Shen, sought the collaboration of MAPTB to leverage their shared commitment to improving TB care. Representing MAPTB Federal, Dr. Mazlina bte Mohtar (Honorary Medical Director), MAPTB Selangor's volunteer Puan Lum Yin Pin, and APTB Kuala Lumpur's volunteer Puan Noorsheela bte Mohd Sidek joined the research program.
As collaborators, the MAPTB team played a crucial role in identifying TB patients for engagement and facilitating connections within the TB community through knowledge sharing. Ten patients participated in the program, each receiving a RM100 Jaya Jusco voucher as a token of appreciation. Dr. Hemawathi a/p Shummugham, Head of the TB & Leprosy Unit at PKD Hulu Selangor, along with her staff, assisted MAPTB Selangor in identifying suitable patients. The program involved participants completing survey forms (Part 1 and Part 2), providing feedback, participating in video recordings, and engaging with slide presentations.
This collaborative effort underscores the importance of integrating technological innovations with community engagement to enhance TB treatment adherence and patient outcomes in Malaysia.
